Andrew Gillum Officially Charged After Drug Arrest

Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is facing new legal troubles: after his arrest in Alabama, formal charges have been filed against him. According to recently filed court documents, the politician faces one felony and two misdemeanor counts.

The criminal complaint alleges that Gillum is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, specifically methamphetamine, as well as misdemeanor possession of marijuana for personal use and possession of drug paraphernalia. The incident occurred on July 2 in Baldwin County, Alabama.

As previously reported, Gillum was arrested last week on Highway 98 near Walmart Drive in Daphne. Police stopped him for erratic driving and found 3 grams of methamphetamine, 8 pre-rolled marijuana joints, 4 cut straws, 3 pipes, and a bong in his vehicle.

This is not the first scandal in Gillum's career. In 2018, he won the Democratic primary and faced Republican Ron DeSantis in the Florida governor's race. Gillum narrowly lost by about 30,000 votes, one of the most dramatic moments in the state's political history.

Prior to that, Gillum served as mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 to 2018. His political career seemed on the rise, but the new charges could end his future in politics.

Gillum's lawyers have not yet issued official comments, but sources close to the politician say he intends to fight the charges. The legal proceedings could drag on, posing a serious challenge for the former candidate.
