Andrew Gillum Tests Negative for Drugs After Meth Bust

Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum has provided evidence that he did not use drugs after his arrest on methamphetamine charges. According to TMZ, the politician completed a drug testing program, and the results came back negative.

In court documents obtained by the outlet, Gillum requested a hearing to determine whether he needs a court-approved drug treatment program. The court granted his request and scheduled the hearing for next month.

Earlier this month, Gillum was pulled over in Alabama for erratic driving. Police found 3 grams of meth, 8 pre-rolled marijuana joints, 4 cut straws, 3 pipes, and a bong in his car.

Prosecutors charged Gillum with felony possession of a controlled substance, as well as misdemeanor possession of marijuana for personal use and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The preliminary hearing is set for August 4. Gillum maintains his innocence and claims he did not use drugs. The negative test could be a significant point in his defense, though lawyers note it does not guarantee the charges will be dropped.

The incident has been a major blow to Gillum's reputation. He ran for governor of Florida in 2018 and lost by a narrow margin. After the arrest, he stepped back from public politics, but he might attempt a comeback if the charges are reduced or dismissed.

Experts believe that even with a negative drug test, the court may still require Gillum to undergo treatment if deemed necessary. The final decision will be made at the August hearing.
