Azealia Banks Files Restraining Order Against Ex-Manager Over Alleged Psychological Abuse

Singer Azealia Banks has filed for a temporary restraining order against her former manager Jeff Kwatinetz, accusing him of psychological and emotional abuse spanning over a decade. According to documents filed Monday, the artist claims she has suffered from Kwatinetz's actions since 2014.

In the filing, Banks alleges that in 2014, Kwatinetz took advantage of her intoxication to get her to sign a life insurance policy. "He gave me expensive red wine and put the policy in front of me when I was drunk and we were cozied up," the document states. The singer also claims the policy was not reviewed by a lawyer and she is unsure if it is still active or who the beneficiary is.

Describing her relationship with Kwatinetz, Banks checked the box indicating "we are dating or used to date," alleging an "intimate and very close relationship" and accusing him of mixing personal matters with control over her career. The rapper further claims Kwatinetz hired a private security firm to "locate and profile" her, including aerial mapping of her home.

Other allegations include false accusations of trying to rob his house, sightings of unmarked cars near her residences, and a wide-open window upon returning home. Banks says the most recent incident occurred in November, accusing Kwatinetz of coercive control, financial exploitation, blackmail, and disturbing her peace, while noting he has not spoken to her directly in about 10 years.

The singer also claims Kwatinetz demanded she extend her recording contract and produce more music for his financial gain, while falsely telling the court she refused to be deposed. Kwatinetz's lawyer, Michael Weinsten, called the filing a "desperate act" and noted that a court has already found Banks liable for defaming his client. The trial on damages has concluded, with a ruling expected in the coming months.

Banks is seeking not only a stay-away and no-contact order but also protection for her mother, sister, niece, and nephew, fearing Kwatinetz might target them. She additionally requests disclosure and cancellation of the alleged life insurance policy, a ban on surveillance, and permission to appear remotely at hearings. The filing clarifies that the alleged abuse is psychological and emotional, not physical.
