Bison Flips Tourist in Yellowstone: Video

In Yellowstone National Park, a bison attacked an elderly man and tossed him into the air, and the whole thing was caught on camera. The victim, a grandfather who was visiting with his grandson, was seriously injured. The video, shot by a professional photographer, quickly went viral.

The incident happened Friday evening. Photographer Mike MacLeod was filming a bison rolling in the dirt when two tourists—an older man with a white beard and a younger man—walked by and stopped to take pictures. The bison suddenly charged at them.

The footage shows the bison locking onto the older man, who tries to dodge the animal but is eventually launched into the air when the bison uses its head and horns. The video cuts off, but MacLeod says he and others rushed in to scare the bison away and called 911.

According to MacLeod, the tourists were not provoking the animal and were at a safe distance recommended by the National Park Service (at least 75 feet from bison and elk). Still, the bison perceived them as a threat.

The grandfather suffered serious injuries in the attack. His grandson was apparently unharmed. Details about the victim's condition have not been released.

This incident is a stark reminder that wild animals are unpredictable. Yellowstone is home to free-roaming bison, and visitors must keep a safe distance and stay alert.
