Bryan Kohberger Wants to Withdraw Guilty Plea, Claims Innocence

Bryan Kohberger, convicted of murdering four University of Idaho students, has filed a petition to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming he confessed due to false promises and disinformation. A year ago, he pleaded guilty, avoiding the death penalty and receiving four life sentences. Now he insists he is innocent.

In an interview with The New York Times, Kohberger stated: "My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on by false promises and blatant disinformation, MUST be withdrawn." He did not specify the promises but argued that "justice was not served" and questions remain.

The victims were Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, students at the University of Idaho. The murders occurred in November 2022, sparking national attention. Kohberger was arrested that December.

His guilty plea in 2023 spared him the death penalty. Now he claims the deal was coerced. In his statement, he emphasized that "justice shall remain abjectly miscarried unless that plea is withdrawn."

Legal experts note such motions are rare, and the court will need to assess their validity. A hearing date has not been set. The victims' families have not yet commented.
