Congresswoman Luna Defends Canoeist Hearn in Vandalism Case

Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna is speaking out against jail time for Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who is accused of vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The politician believes community service would be a more appropriate punishment.

Hearn is charged with destruction of federal property worth over $1,000 after allegedly peeling paint off the pool surface. The incident occurred last year, but the case has only recently moved forward. A judge indicted him on a felony charge, which could carry up to 10 years in prison.

In an interview, Congresswoman Luna argued that the punishment should not be too severe if Hearn is found guilty. She suggested a few hours of community service, saying it would teach him a lesson without being overly harsh. She emphasized that the damage was not extensive.

Luna shared a personal story: as a child, she accidentally wrote her name in wet concrete, not realizing it was vandalism. As punishment, she had to work extra hours at her church. She believes Hearn deserves a similar sentence, though slightly stricter due to his age.

Hearn maintains his innocence, claiming he only touched the pool and did not remove any paint. However, Luna is skeptical, noting that a judge would not indict without evidence, especially given the security cameras in the area.

If convicted, Hearn could face up to a decade behind bars. But with Luna advocating for leniency, the athlete may receive a lighter sentence. The final decision rests with the court.
