Dame Dash Slams Jay-Z's Yankee Stadium Shows

Damon Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, was not impressed by Jay-Z's series of concerts at Yankee Stadium celebrating the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt. Instead of praise, he saw a well-crafted marketing ploy rather than a celebration of musical heritage.

In an interview on The Art of Dialogue podcast, Dash analyzed the performances from a business perspective rather than a musical one. He questioned the purpose of the concerts, claiming the entire production was aimed at selling Yankees-branded merchandise. According to him, logos, jerseys, and paraphernalia turned the shows into an advertising campaign, pushing the music into the background.

The former business partner of Jay-Z also suggested that some crowd shots and promotional activations might not have been organic, and did not rule out that people could have been paid to attend as part of a marketing budget. However, Dash stressed he did not know if that actually happened.

The criticism also targeted the cinematic intro where Beyoncé shaves Jay-Z's head before he walks on stage. Dash called the scene forced and fake-looking, noting it tried too hard to spotlight the couple's relationship. He even joked he would never let his own girlfriend cut his hair, calling the whole thing 'contrived.'

From Dash's point of view, the biggest shows in the Bronx were selling much more than just tickets. He added that he would rather see something fresh than an overly polished nostalgia play.

It is worth noting that Dame Dash is not an unbiased critic: he and Jay-Z have a long-standing feud that dates back to the dissolution of Roc-A-Fella Records. This adds a particular edge to his remarks, as they involve personal and business disagreements that have lasted for decades.
