Fan Denies Racism in IShowSpeed World Cup Incident

A fan who appeared in a viral video allegedly mocking streamer IShowSpeed with a racist gesture has come forward to defend himself. Argentine supporter Micha insists his actions were misinterpreted and that he had no racist intent.

In a statement on X, Micha explained that he was merely mimicking IShowSpeed's own behavior, as the streamer was actively taunting Lionel Messi during the Argentina vs. Egypt match. "I wasn't being racist, I was imitating Speed himself. It disgusts me and that anti-Argentina campaign has me fed up. And if it had been 'racist', then tough luck for him, he's in all the matches busting balls against Argentina. What are we gonna tell him? Love ya?" the fan wrote.

The incident occurred on Monday when IShowSpeed watched from a front-row seat and made gestures toward Messi during a penalty kick. Argentina, trailing 2-0, staged a comeback to win 3-2.

However, the video of Micha mimicking a monkey has been viewed millions of times and sparked outrage. The timing was particularly bad, as FIFA had just launched an investigation into alleged racist abuse aimed at the streamer during an earlier World Cup match, also involving Argentina, against Cape Verde in the round of 32.

In that match, a fan was accused of telling IShowSpeed to "go cry to the zoo." FIFA swiftly responded, stating it "strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms." The findings of that investigation have not been announced yet.

Micha maintains that his actions were simply a parody of the streamer's behavior, which he claims was provocative. "He's in every match getting on Argentina's case, so there's nothing to be offended about," he added.

The incident has reignited discussions about fan behavior at major tournaments and the influence of streamers and celebrities on stadium atmosphere. While FIFA has not yet imposed sanctions on Micha, public pressure is mounting.
