Karmelo Anthony's Lawyer Demands New Judge

In a new twist in the case of convicted murderer Karmelo Anthony, his defense is seeking to remove the judge who presided over the trial. Attorney Russell Wilson claims that Judge John Roach showed bias after the verdict, calling into question the fairness of any further proceedings.

On Tuesday, according to court records obtained by WFAA, a new judge, Sid L. Harle, was assigned to the case. He will now consider the defense's motion to recuse Judge Roach from post-trial proceedings. This is a significant step that could potentially lead to a retrial.

Wilson also alleged that 'gentleman's agreements' between attorneys about the admissibility of testimony were not fully honored, which he says impacted Anthony's decision not to testify and thus the outcome of the trial. The defense insists such violations make the verdict unjust.

However, the Collin County District Attorney's office strongly denies the claims. First Assistant District Attorney Bill Wirskye stated that the defense's submission contained 'inaccurate characterizations of the trial proceedings' and that the prosecution conducted the trial ethically and in full compliance with court rulings. The two sides are clearly at odds, and now it's up to the new judge.

Judge Harle will decide whether Karmelo Anthony gets a new judge and possibly a new trial. As a reminder, last month Anthony was convicted of murder for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a 2025 Texas high school track meet. He is currently serving a 35-year sentence.
