Karmelo Anthony's Legal Team Seeks New Trial, Removal of Judge

Lawyers for Karmelo Anthony, convicted of murder, have made a bold move: they filed motions for a new trial and to disqualify the judge who presided over his case. The defense argues the trial was unfair due to several procedural violations.

On Tuesday, the defense filed two major motions. The first seeks to remove Judge John Roach from all remaining post-trial proceedings. The second asks the court to overturn Anthony's conviction entirely. Anthony's attorneys believe a different judge should decide on the new-trial issues.

In the recusal motion, the lawyers point to Roach's post-verdict interview with a local TV station and his written statement to Fox News. They argue he publicly endorsed the guilty verdict, defended his courtroom rulings, and declared Anthony received a fair trial. The defense claims these comments make it impossible for Roach to rule impartially on post-trial motions.

The separate motion for a new trial claims Anthony's constitutional rights were violated. Specifically, it cites courtroom access restrictions that allegedly deprived him of a public trial. Additionally, prosecutors reportedly backed away from an off-the-record agreement that led Anthony not to testify in his own defense.

As previously reported, Anthony overhauled his legal team after his murder conviction, bringing in a new group of attorneys for his appeal. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison for murdering Austin Metcalf at a Frisco, Texas high school track meet.

Now, those attorneys are directly challenging both the conviction and the judge who oversaw the trial. The outcome of these motions could significantly impact the future of the case.
