Kaylee Hottle Was Preparing for Superhero Film Before Death

The tragic death of 26-year-old actress Kaylee Hottle has shocked Hollywood. TMZ has learned that at the time of her death, she was cast in a superhero film and preparing for production. The project was titled "What Doesn't Kill Us."

Kaylee signed on to the film in 2024. According to screenwriter Andy Mingo, the final script was expected to be completed by August 2026, but a production start date had not yet been set. Mingo and his co-writer Anna Campbell are currently grieving Kaylee's death, but they believe her character will remain in the script.

Andy said they need to discuss it with Elliot and Lucas Woolrich, who created the film's concept. "I think they will choose to keep her character out of respect and keep her spirit in the film," he added.

The plot of "What Doesn't Kill Us" follows a group of disabled friends who aspire to be superheroes. As Mingo explained, they are not like Marvel characters—they use their disabilities to their advantage. Kaylee's character was deaf but had a heightened sense of pattern recognition.

The screenwriters expressed deep sorrow. "We were truly looking forward to working with someone so talented and are heartbroken by her death," Andy said. Anna added: "Kaylee was the kind of person who has been so spectacular and has made such an important impact on the industry. She didn't let her disability stop her, and that's exactly what we hope to perpetuate with a film like this. This is a great loss, and we are devastated."

As previously reported, Kaylee Hottle was pronounced dead at a Maryland hospital early Tuesday after the car she was riding in veered off the road and crashed into a ditch. Three people were inside the vehicle, but Kaylee was the only one who died. A photo of the wrecked 1995 Honda Accord shows the vehicle with a heavily damaged front end.

On Wednesday, the medical examiner said the actress suffered multiple blunt force injuries, and her death was accidental. Fans and colleagues worldwide mourn the untimely passing of a rising star who had already made a name for herself in the film industry.
