Melania Trump Didn't Want Elon Musk Sleeping Over at White House

You'd think letting a guest stay overnight would be simple, but for Melania Trump it became a real bone of contention. A new book by New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan reveals details of a family dispute: the first lady categorically objected to Elon Musk staying overnight at the White House, but Donald insisted on having his way.

According to excerpts from the book "Regime Change," published by Radar Online on Tuesday, the conflict erupted when the Tesla and SpaceX founder asked for permission to spend the night at the presidential residence. The elder Trump was open to the idea, but his wife put up a fierce fight. In the end, the head of the family prevailed, and Musk spent several nights in the famous Lincoln Bedroom.

The billionaire later fondly recalled the visits. In May 2025, he told reporters that Trump would invite him to stay right during flights on Air Force One or Marine One. "The president's very, very... I guess we're good friends and we'll be on Air Force One or Marine One and then he's like, 'Hey do you want to stay over?' and I'm like, 'Sure.' And then he gave me a tour of the Lincoln Bedroom and... oh, this is cool," Musk shared, emphasizing he never asked for the invitation himself.

He also praised the host's hospitality: Trump would call late at night and suggest he grab some ice cream from the kitchen. Musk didn't miss the chance, eating a whole tub of caramel Häagen-Dazs. According to him, he stayed at the White House "more than once," and when no guest rooms were available, he'd sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor of his office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

However, the warm relationship seems to be a thing of the past. Musk and Trump have been embroiled in a public feud for months. Although they showed a semblance of reconciliation at a summit with China in May, it's unlikely the entrepreneur will receive another invitation to sleep over anytime soon.

Why was Melania so adamantly against having Elon Musk as an overnight guest? The book doesn't give a direct answer, but the implication is clear: perhaps the first lady had a premonition of the future problems this visit would bring. In any case, the story has gained wide attention and added another stroke to the portrait of the complex relationships within the Trump family and with their famous friends.
