Mitch McConnell Releases New 'Proof of Life' Photo After Fall

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell has released another "proof of life" photo and health update, following a fall and injury several weeks ago. The Kentucky Republican continues intensive physical therapy as part of his recovery.

In a statement issued Monday, McConnell said he is "still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors' orders." He also noted he would be unable to attend an annual festival in Kentucky this coming Saturday.

The release included a photo of McConnell sitting in a geriatric chair next to his wife, Elaine Chao, presumably at the rehab center. This is the second such image in two weeks; the first was scrutinized online like the Zapruder film, sparking conspiracy theories.

The new photo is cropped so that McConnell's hands and anything below the waist are not visible. This has fueled more jokes and comparisons to "Weekend at Bernie's II" on social media, with many questioning the authenticity of the image and suggesting the senator may not be fully in control.

McConnell's doctor also issued a statement, saying that since discharge from hospital, the senator has "maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls." He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to work.
