Patrick Dempsey Won't Run for Senate Amid Platner Scandal

Patrick Dempsey, best known for his role in "Grey's Anatomy," has officially shut down rumors that he might run for the U.S. Senate. In an open letter published Wednesday, he admitted he seriously considered the possibility but ultimately decided against entering politics.

The Hollywood star found himself at the center of political speculation after Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner faced misconduct allegations. With Platner's campaign in turmoil, Dempsey's name emerged as a potential replacement candidate.

In his letter titled "Why I'm not running for US Senate," published in the Portland Press Herald, Dempsey said he gave the idea "real thought" and asked himself whether he could make a meaningful difference in Congress. However, after much soul-searching, he concluded that his future is not in Washington.

Platner officially suspended his campaign Wednesday night. He has denied sexual assault claims from an ex-girlfriend and another ex's allegation that he secretly removed condoms without consent. Party leaders have until July 27 to choose a replacement candidate.

Rather than launching a campaign of his own, Dempsey said he will stick with the work that has defined his life off-screen: helping cancer patients and their loved ones through the Dempsey Center, which he founded in memory of his mother who died of cancer.

Dempsey's letter also serves as a message to whoever ultimately gets the Democratic nomination. He said Maine deserves a leader who puts service before power, leads with empathy, works across the aisle, and tells the truth. By stepping aside, Dempsey is challenging those who do run to live up to these standards.
