R. Kelly Asks Trump for Clemency Citing Health Issues

American R&B singer R. Kelly, who is serving a 31-year sentence for sexual crimes, has filed a clemency petition with the U.S. Department of Justice. His lawyer Beau Brindley confirmed that the documents were officially submitted to the Office of the Pardon Attorney on Tuesday, and the musician now hopes for early release.

The petition is addressed to President Donald Trump, who has the power to commute sentences. Kelly was convicted in 2021 in New York for racketeering, sexual exploitation of children, forced labor, and Mann Act violations, and in 2022 in Chicago he was found guilty of producing child pornography and enticing a minor for sexual activity.

The attorney claims the verdict was unfair because the racketeering charge was improperly used. In his view, prosecutors deliberately targeted a public figure rather than seeking justice. Brindley also stressed that his client has serious health problems, including a blood clot in his neck, making further imprisonment dangerous.

This is not the first time a celebrity has asked a president for clemency, but for Kelly it may be a last hope for freedom. He has previously tried to appeal the sentence without success.

Experts note that the chances of clemency are slim, especially given the scale of the charges and public attention to the case. However, the lawyer intends to use all legal avenues, including appeals and other motions.

It is unclear whether Brindley has spoken directly with Trump or the White House, but he stated he will continue to fight for his client. The situation remains tense, and many are watching the developments.
