Rebel Wilson Wins Defamation Case Against Actress Charlotte MacInnes

Actor and director Rebel Wilson has won a legal victory: an Australian judge dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed against her by actress Charlotte MacInnes. The ruling marks a significant step in the ongoing dispute surrounding the filming of "The Deb," Wilson's directorial debut.

Justice Elizabeth Raper of the Federal Court of Australia in Sydney ruled that MacInnes must cover Wilson's legal costs. The lawsuit included claims of defamation and breach of contract, but all were rejected. For Wilson, this is not only a legal win but also a reputational one.

The conflict began after Wilson publicly alleged that one of the film's producers, Amanda Ghost, had sexually harassed MacInnes. According to Wilson, the incident occurred on September 23, when MacInnes and Ghost were swimming at Bondi Beach and later shared a bath in their swimsuits. MacInnes allegedly told Wilson about it and said she felt uncomfortable.

However, MacInnes denied this version of events. In her lawsuit, she claimed that Wilson posted on Instagram between September 2024 and July 2025, accusing MacInnes of changing her story to advance her career. MacInnes argued that these posts damaged her reputation.

Justice Raper concluded that Wilson's statements were not defamatory, as a reasonable person would not think less of MacInnes because of them. The court also found that Wilson had proven the substantial truth of her claims. The judge did not rule on whether the shared bath constituted sexualized conduct.

This case has drawn attention to the issue of harassment in the film industry and the challenges actresses face when speaking out about inappropriate behavior. For Rebel Wilson, known for "Pitch Perfect" and "Bridesmaids," this is another affirmation of her principled stance.

The court victory is likely to strengthen Wilson's position as a director and producer. "The Deb," a musical about young women in rural Australia, has already received media attention, and now there will be fewer legal distractions.
