TODAY Host Attack: Suspect Seen in Live Shot Before Incident

The incident at the TODAY show studio on Thursday took an unexpected turn when it was revealed that the alleged attacker appeared on live television just before storming the set. Observant viewers and editors noticed a man resembling Andrew Truelove pacing behind anchors Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin during a segment about a massive 14-foot great white shark possibly heading toward Cape Cod.

In the footage, the man believed to be Truelove can be seen nervously walking back and forth in the background, seemingly smoking. Although TMZ has not independently confirmed his identity, the resemblance in hairstyle, mustache, and clothing to what he wore when later arrested by police is striking. The sighting occurred around 8:45 a.m., just 15 minutes before he allegedly bypassed security and rushed into the studio.

According to law enforcement sources, Truelove was initially looking for anchor Al Roker, but when that plan failed, he turned his anger on Craig Melvin, hurling racial slurs, including the N-word. The attacker was arrested by the NYPD and charged with hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment.

The 41-year-old has a criminal history in New York, including multiple prior cases involving trespassing and a felony conviction. This incident has sparked widespread discussion about television studio security and how easily an outsider can breach a live broadcast.

On Friday morning, Craig Melvin reassured viewers that he and his colleagues were “safe and sound” following the serious incident. The court also issued protective orders in favor of Melvin and Al Roker to safeguard them from Truelove in the future. Additionally, it was reported that the security guard who failed to prevent the intrusion has been fired.

This case highlights the vulnerability of TV studios located in public spaces like Rockefeller Center, where TODAY is broadcast. While studios typically have enhanced security, the incident shows that even with measures in place, breakdowns can occur.
