Today Show Attacker Is Sandy Hook Conspiracy Theorist

The man who caused a disturbance on the Today show and confronted hosts Craig Melvin and Al Roker has been identified as Andrew Truelove, a conspiracy theorist with a criminal history that includes vandalizing memorials for Sandy Hook victims. Truelove was arrested on multiple charges following Thursday's incident at NBC's Rockefeller Center studios.

According to TMZ, Andrew Truelove bypassed security and entered the building, asking for Al Roker. When he couldn't find the weatherman, he turned his attention to Craig Melvin, cornering him in a restricted area. Witnesses reported that Truelove shouted racial slurs and lunged at the host.

In 2014, Truelove, who was homeless at the time, stole memorial signs bearing the names of Sandy Hook victims from playgrounds in New Jersey and Connecticut. The Los Angeles Times reported that his actions were motivated by his belief that the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax.

Police say Truelove told them he had always wanted to use a racial epithet in the face of a Black celebrity. He is now being held at Rikers Island on $20,000 bail and faces hate crime charges, as well as charges for trespassing and assault.

The incident has raised concerns about security in media offices and the dangers posed by individuals with extremist beliefs. It also highlights the ongoing issue of conspiracy theories leading to real-world crimes.

Craig Melvin has since commented on the ordeal, saying he is fine and attributing the incident to "a lot of wacky out there." However, the event has sparked a broader conversation about the need for enhanced security measures in newsrooms and the importance of addressing the spread of misinformation.
