Tony Romo Told Police He Was Going to Grandma's Before OWI Arrest

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo found himself at the center of a scandal after being arrested for operating while intoxicated (OWI) in Wisconsin. Newly released body camera footage shows Romo telling police he was on his way to visit his grandparents when he was pulled over.

The video, obtained by TMZ, captures the July 23 incident. Romo explained he had just left a golf tournament and was heading to see his elderly relatives. The officer, however, proceeded with the investigation and asked Romo to step out of his Jeep for field sobriety tests.

In the footage, Tony Romo repeatedly asks if he can call his lawyer before exiting the vehicle. The officer denies the request and orders him out, stating he is being detained pending an OWI investigation.

Romo then puts his hands on his head and is handcuffed before being placed in the back of a patrol car. Later at the police station, he performs sobriety tests but complains of difficulty bending due to previous back surgeries.

Police reported that Romo performed poorly on the tests, leading to his arrest. Court records show he also refused to take an intoxication test after the arrest, jeopardizing his driving privileges.

Romo has requested a hearing to challenge the citation but could lose his license for a year. The arrest came after he competed in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship; he later withdrew from a Texas golf tournament he regularly attends.
