Yellowstone Bison Attack Victim Identified, Reveals Severe Injuries

The man who became the star of a viral video from Yellowstone National Park, where he was tossed into the air by a massive bison, has revealed the extent of his injuries. The incident occurred on Friday at the Bridge Bay Campground near Yellowstone Lake, and 65-year-old Carl Isom-McDaniel is now sharing his story with a touch of humor despite the serious damage.

According to witnesses, the man was traveling with his grandson when a bison suddenly became enraged and charged at them. In footage captured by another tourist, Carl is seen trying to flee, weaving between trees, but the animal catches up and flings him into the air like a rag doll. He suffered multiple broken bones in the fall, but reportedly kept his composure and even cracked jokes while lying in pain awaiting help.

Carl Isom-McDaniel was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Bystanders, including the videographer, managed to distract the enraged animal by shouting and rushing toward it, sending the bison running. The National Park Service advises keeping at least 75 feet away from bison and elk, and it appears Carl and his grandson were at that distance when they stopped to take photos of the animal.

Experts suggest the bison's aggression may have been triggered by the start of mating season, when males experience a surge in testosterone. Encounters with wildlife are common in Yellowstone, but serious injuries are rare. The park records dozens of incidents each year where tourists get too close to bison, yet attacks with such severe outcomes are infrequent.

Despite the pain, the victim took the incident in stride, saying he now has a "helluva story." His grandson, who was nearby during the attack, was unharmed.
