At ViewerCon, Brown shared that problems began in season one. A white executive threatened to fire him and ruin his career if he continued making participants cry. 'If you make one more person cry, you're fired! You're worthless!' Brown recalled the executive saying.

But Brown stood his ground. He continued his approach, and season two featured billboards reading, 'We're not crying, you are.' The show won Emmys precisely for the emotional depth that executives initially tried to suppress.
