Serena Williams Injures Knee at Wimbledon, Doubles With Venus in Doubt
Serena Williams injured her right knee during her first-round singles match at Wimbledon on Tuesday, casting doubt on her scheduled doubles appearance with sister Venus later this week. The 44-year-old tennis star lost to Maya Joint 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 after tweaking her knee at the end of the first set.
Agent Jill Smoller confirmed the injury, noting that Williams was excused from post-match media duties by Wimbledon and WTA medical teams. “Serena tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set and was therefore excused from her media obligations,” Smoller said, adding that Williams left the venue unaided and is doing everything possible to be ready for Friday's doubles match.
Reports indicate that doctors advised Williams to stop playing after the injury, but she chose to continue. She was also offered crutches after the match but declined. This was her first singles match in four years, following a comeback that began at the HSBC Championship in London last month, where she partnered with 19-year-old Victoria Mboko.
That tournament also ended prematurely due to injury — this time to Mboko. Now, the potential reunion with Venus Williams on the doubles court at Wimbledon is uncertain. The sisters have won multiple Grand Slam doubles titles together, making their possible pairing a highlight of the tournament.
Despite the loss, many fans view Williams' return to singles competition as a victory in itself. The tennis icon continues to push through challenges, and her supporters are hopeful she can recover in time for the doubles event.
The final decision on Williams' participation will likely depend on her knee's response to treatment over the next few days. Serena Williams remains determined to compete, but her health must come first.
