Kenny Smith: Lakers Not Title Contenders Without LeBron James

NBA champion and analyst Kenny Smith says the Los Angeles Lakers cannot contend for a championship without LeBron James. He believes the team's new additions won't fill the void left by the superstar.

In an interview at LAX, the TNT analyst assessed the state of the Purple and Gold after James's departure. Smith thinks the team with Luka Dončić will make the playoffs, but that's not enough for a title.

"This is a competitive team, but not a championship team yet. LeBron James makes them a championship team," Smith emphasized. He added that without James, the Lakers lack a leader to guide them in crucial games.

During the offseason, the club signed Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Quentin Grimes, and re-signed Austin Reaves. However, Smith doubts these moves are enough for a title run.

Despite the parting, Smith suggested that if James returned, the Lakers would again be favorites. For now, the team must prove itself in the new season.

The "Snowtime Lakers" nickname circulating online also drew a comment from Smith, though he didn't elaborate. Fans will have to get used to the new reality without LeBron.
