Not Just Lettuce: New Sources of Diarrhea Parasite Found

Love fresh herbs? Be careful! After iceberg lettuce, parsley and cilantro are now under suspicion. Health officials in North Carolina are warning of a surge in cyclospora infections, a parasite that causes severe diarrhea.

Since May 1, there have been 561 cases. While lettuce was initially blamed, interviews with patients show parsley and cilantro keep appearing in their diets. It's unclear if this outbreak is linked to cases in other states involving lettuce and Taco Bell.

Two major cyclosporiasis outbreaks are being investigated. The largest is tied to lettuce and Taco Bell, while a second outbreak, with at least 72 cases, has no identified source yet. The North Carolina Department of Health advises thoroughly washing or cooking lettuce, parsley, and cilantro to avoid illness.
